The CW has found someone to play DC's resident time traveler, and he comes from Doctor Who.
Deadline reports that actor Arthur Darvill has been cast to play Richard "Rip" Hunter in the forthcoming team television series spinning off from the CW's Arrow and The Flash. Davill is best known for playing Rory Williams as one of of the companions in Doctor Who, and also played a role in Broadchuch.
In comics, Rip Hunter uses his invention, the Time Sphere, to travel through time in adventures. In recent years he was revealed to be the son of Booster Gold, also from the future, and his character went down a darker path. In the reboot of the DC Universe with "The New 52," Hunter was revealed to have turned against Booster Gold and is seen to employ bloodthirsty means to combat people who use time travel for nefarious purposes.
Following talk that this CW spinoff of The Arrow and Flash would feature three characters never-before-seen in live-action, Rip Hunter is the first announced castmember who fits that role. Two more, a male and a female, are still expected according to Deadline.
The Arrow/The Flash spinoff show has been pencilled in, according to Deadline, as a mid-season show in early 2016 ala Marvel's recent Agent Carter on ABC. Renée joins a cast which includes Brandon Rotuh as Ray Palmer/The Atom, Wentworth Miller as Leonard Snart/Captain Cold, Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory/Heatwave as well as Victor Garber as Dr. Martin Stein and Caity Lotz - the latter being noteworthy since her character, Sarah Lance/Black Canary, was recently killed off in Arrow.
