The Carol Corps are getting drafted for a war.
Marvel has announced via Fast Company that Carol Danvers is getting some back-up for Secret Wars in the form of a new series titled Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps. The regular Captain Marvel creative team of Kelly Sue DeConnick and David Lopez will be joined by co-writer Kelly Thompson in this story of Danvers leading an all-female group of fighter pilots based out of the Battleworld domain known as Hala Field.
According to DeConnick, Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps will have Danvers suffering from a slight case of amnesia as the Carol Corps will "set about helping Carol try and answer a question about where she is from, and that puts them in conflict with some of the greater forces of the Marvel Universe."
The Carol Corps is said to include members of the Banshee Squadron previously introduced in the Captain Marvel series
Speaking of the new member of the creative team, series editor Sana Amanat said Kelly Thompson was recuirted as part of a focused effort to hire more "female voices".
"Kelly Sue came in years ago with [longtime Marvel writer] Brian Bendis, and cowrote with him," Amanat told Fast Company. "What was great about that was the concept of the mentor and the mentee. We don't have an official program like that, but I personally feel it's really beneficial when people who've been in the ranks for a while, and really know their craft well, take in a newer writer who can really benefit from their experience. Bringing in more female voices is something that's very important to everyone at Marvel, and to me in particular, and there was a really great opportunity here to do that."
The series is said to begin June 10, but no details are available on the length of the series. Given the shared creative team between the regular Captain Marvel ongoing series and this new Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps, it's presumable that this new series would replace the ongoing for the time being. Marvel has not commented.
