Amidst the major league casting news of Warner Bros. Suicide Squad movie, the actress to play Amanda Waller was one of the few major roles unannounced, but with big names circulated in the rumor mill. One of prominent names mentioned was Viola Davis, and earlier this week the actress spoke about the possibility of playing the character. And now The Wrap reports Davis and Warner Bros. are in deep negotiations for a multi-picture deal.
If accurate, it would confirm Waller's frontrunner status for the role, and also suggests that Waller could play a more substantial role in the DCU films in addition to Suicide Squad, potentially similar to Samuel L. Jackson's role as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Wrap's unnamed sources say one of the hang-ups in the negotiations is Davis' busy schedule with filming her ABC TV series How to Get Away With Murder. Those same sources add that Will Smith, who is already announced to play Deadshot in Suicide Squad, has "personally lobbied" for the studio to "do whatever it takes" to hire Davis.
As mentioned, during a press junket several days ago for the film Blackhat Davis talked about playing Waller but fell short of confirming she's doing it..
“I’m fascinated by [Amanda Waller]," Davis says to Nerd Report's Fred Topel. "I’m fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction. She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.”
That might sound like a confirmation that Davis is indeed playing Waller - and some other news sites have said as much - but the actress is specific to say that she hasn't signed on to the role ... yet.
"I’ve read up about her," Davis says of Waller," but I’m working out my schedule for Suicide Squad."
