It's SINESTRO's Head That's Getting Bigger in GREEN LANTERN's GODHEAD

Sinestro's always been a little over-confident, but during the "Godhead" storyline in the Green Lantern books, the character's arrogance is at a whole new level as the Lanterns are confronting the New Gods.

In last week's Sinestro #7, written by Cullen Bunn, the title character emphasized his own feelings of superiority by not only "vexing" the New God Bekka, but he even offered her membership in the Sinestro Corps.

"Godhead" has been spinning through the Green Lantern books since October, and things look dire for the various Corps as they converge on New Genesis in a last ditch effort to save themselves from near annihilation by the New Gods.

With Sinestro playing an integral part in the crossover, while his title heads toward a showdown with Mongul, Newsarama talked to Bunn to find out more about what's coming up in the title.

Newsarama: Cullen, there were a few surprises in Sinestro #7. As this issue concludes, how would you describe Sinestro's mindset and thinking at this point in the Godhead story, about the nature of the threat and how to challenge it?

Cullen Bunn: Sinestro is, at this point, convinced that there is only one Lantern who can save all of the light wielders. He believes, of course, that he is that Lantern. And if he saves the day, he wants his “peers” to acknowledge it.

For a guy who thinks of himself as a god among men, the sheer power of the New Gods both impresses and irritates him. After he saves the Lanterns, he wants to find a way to attain that kind of power.

Nrama: Does Sinestro actually have a crush on Bekka?

Bunn: Bekka has this strange influence over those around her. They fall in love with her to the point of absolute loyalty. Does Sinestro feel a bit of that? Maybe so. He certainly seems smitten. But with Sinestro, he could just as easily be “smitten” with the power at her command.

Nrama: Why did you choose to have Sinestro come up against Bekka, her "attractive" powers and her "for your love" army? Why did that interest you as a challenge for Sinestro in particular?

Bunn: Sinestro sees love as fear. He also thinks the Sinestro Corps became too bloated with Lanterns who were unworthy. If he’s going to build his Corps, he’s going to do it his way and pick only the absolute best of the best. Bekka qualifies in his mind. Also, it was Bekka who first attacked the Sinestro Corps, so Sinestro would love to get her under his thumb.

With their encounter, I really wanted to show Sinestro as an almost devilish tempter. I also liked the idea of a conversation between Sinestro and Bekka that could be seen as full of threats or full of flirtation depending on how you read it.

Nrama: There have been a lot of twists and turns in this Godhead story so far, and Sinestro's been a big part of the story. What can you tell fans about the next chapter of Godhead? Anything you can tell us about the overall story, or Sinestro's role in particular?

Nrama: The next issue is Sinestro coming face to face with Highfather himself. And to face that kind of power, he’s going to call on the wellspring of Parallax. This issue will see Sinestro on his own, taking the actions he feels will singlehandedly save the Lanterns and the planet Earth.

Nrama: You've got a new art team coming on in January. What do Brad Walker and Andrew Hennessy bring to the title?

Bunn: Brad and Andrew are amazing, and they will be taking on a story with loads of science fiction action, epic battles, and a number of wild characters. The pages I’ve seen so far are filled with awesome kinetic energy. And Brad draws a very sinister Sinestro. Right in the middle of this huge battle, we’ll see these very charming and cruel moments from our “hero.”

Nrama: You've also got Mongul coming up, and you're visiting Warworld. These two meeting each other can't be good. What can you tell us about Sinestro's battle with Mongul?

Bunn: Mongul still holds a grudge against Sinestro, and he strikes him where it hurts by attacking Korugarians to bait his enemy. Sinestro takes the bait, but he has an ulterior motive. The problem is, Mongul has some unexpected allies.

Nrama: Anything else you can tell fans about the issues between now and the Convergence break?

Bunn: We’ll be seeing Sinestro make some bold moves in his grab for power. We’ll learn if Bekka accepts his offer to become a Yellow Lantern or not. We’ll see more of the Paling. And we’ll take some steps that bring us closer to the future we saw in the Future’s End story.

Nrama: Are you still working on Sinestro next year? And if so, anything you can hint about Sinestro will experience over the next year?

Bunn: There will come a day when I’ll have to bow out of certain projects. There’s only so much I can do at one time, and I never know what projects will come my way. That said, Sinestro is a book I want to stick with as long as possible. If DC wants me on the book, I’ll be writing it! Future storylines will follow some of the plot threads already revealed. We’ll learn more about the Paling and see a big confrontation between the Sinestro Corps and the Pale Bishop. We’ll also start to learn a lot more about the core group of Yellow Lanterns who stand at Sinestro’s side.
