And now it’s official. Marvel announced via their own Marvel.com that Krysten Ritter has signed on to star as Jessica Jones in the slightly ungainly officially titled Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones. The series will run 13 episodes on Netflix in 2015, the second series of four that all lead up to The Defenders crossover.
Jessica Jones debuted in Alias before being an on again off again member of various Avengers teams, and marrying fellow Avenger Luke Cage. Marvel did not comment on the rumors or reports that Mike Colter will play Cage on the series (and eventually in his own), however.
"Krysten brings both the hard edge and the vulnerability the role demands," said Executive Producer/Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg in the press release. "We can't wait for fans to see her in action, coming to Netflix in 2015."
Jeph Loeb, head of Television for Marvel added, "Krysten Ritter has the type of range, spanning the comic to the tragic, that makes for the stuff of the best Marvel heroes. As Jessica Jones, Krysten will bring one of the most beloved new characters of the past decade to life in a way we know will delight her longtime fans and introduce her to many more."
Daredevil’s 13 episode series is expected to hit the streaming service in Spring 2015. It will be followed by A.K.A. Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and finally the five-episode Defenders uniting all the characters together. The series are all jointly produced by Marvel Television, ABC Studios, and Netflix.
