THE WALKING DEAD Tops October Sales in Double-Digit Gain Month

Loot Crate has suddenly become a tastemaker. After propelling Rocket Raccoon to the top of the Diamond Direct Market comic book charts with its first issue in July, the company, which offers a subscription of randomized “geek and gaming products” in a monthly box, did it again, rocketing the first post-“All Out War” issue of The Walking Dead, #132, to the top of the Diamond charts in October.

As of May 2014, Loot Crate had over 100,000 subscribers, with steady growth, so while exact numbers are unknown, at least that amount is ordered by them, instantly changing the landscape of comics when they include one to pack-in.

The rest of October's Top Ten was rounded out by only six comics - thanks to double-shipping from Marvel's Death of Wolverine, AXIS, and Amazing Spider-Man, all of which saw two issues in the top ten. DC's Batman and Harley Quinn were DC's representatives, showing remarkable staying power for the zany take on the latter character, and the new female Thor #1 filled the final spot.

Top of the trade charts, meanwhile, is the surprise hit Ms. Marvel Vol 1. Introducing a new legacy superhero is hard enough, but making it a young minority female with a deeply religious Muslim family was seen as risky. Part of Marvel's major push to get more female readers, it's clearly working, as a leader in the digital market and now the top selling trade or OGN of October. In fact, Marvel and DC took 8 out of the top 10 this month, including three Batman volumes and another showing from Harley Quinn.

Marvel took both Market Share categories in a decided fashion, beating out DC by over 7% in dollar share and over 5% in unit share - despite DC shipping more overall products (but less trades/GNs). The industry as a whole saw significant growth over both September 2014 and year-to-year over October 2013. Total sales were up in the 10% range in both categories on both comparison charts, keeping year-to-date growth steady at about 4%, despite shipping slightly less product in 2014 so far.
