Marvel Comics has been promising next May's Secret Wars won't be your typical Marvel event, and Thursday they began delivering on that promise to some degree, issuing a video to the comic book press explaining more about the event and the series of 16 teasers it has sent out over the last three weeks.
Here's the video in its entirety:
The video shows all of those teaser images once more, but this time sends each one flying to a unique outlined "nation" on this, the new Battleworld. In the original Secret Wars in the 80s, the Beyonder created Battleworld using parts of different planets, and pit the heroes and villains against one another there. It looks like this time it's created using parts of different Earths from parallel realities. The Beyonder has not been confirmed to have a role in Secret Wars as of yet, but the January 2015 cover for New Avengers #29 sure looks like it's featuring the cosmic character.
If this all sounds familiar to you, you're not alone. DC Comics, Marvel's chief competitor, just announced Convergence. In that event series, coming Spring 2015, Brainiac takes cities from various parallel Earths throughout the DC multiverse, and puts them together on one planet - which he calls Blood Moon - to pit them against each other.
For what it's worth, the Planet Hulk and Age of Apocalypse "nations" got the biggest slices of Battlworld, and there are nearly 20 more slots that haven't been filled in on the map when all 15 of the Marvel teasers get their locations, so there are likely many more worlds from throughout Marvel history yet to be revealed.
Secret Wars launches May 2015 from Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic, with covers by Alex Ross.
