Morena Baccarin is no stranger to genre entertainment, best known in the geek community for her role in Firefly despite her more recent Emmy-nominated turn in Homeland. Now she’s coming to the world of comics through Gotham

Oh, and she’s playing a very important character to the Batman mythos, too: Dr. Leslie Thompkins. The role will be recurring in season one, and a series regular in season 2, according to current plans.

Thompkins in the show will be working at the just re-opened Arkham Asylum. She’ll “find herself drawn close to James Gordon and into more and more dangerous waters,” according to a character description on Deadline. She’ll also be a known friend to the Waynes.

In the comics, Thompkins, created by Denny O’Neil and Dick Giordano, was also a doctor and friend to the Waynes, and became a mother figure to the young Bruce after their death. In the comics, rather than Arkham, she typically works with criminals, orphans, and the other disenfranchised of Gotham City.

No word on her first appearance on the show. Gotham airs Mondays at 8pm, 7 Central on Fox.
