Well that’s certainly interesting. Just days after announcing Secret Wars returning as an event in late Spring 2015, now Marvel sent out this cryptic “Civil War #1: 2015” teaser.
And yes, that’s literally all they gave us - well, that and this image of Captain America (Steve Rogers) and Iron Man (in a suit from several years ago) fighting over Spider-Man - in his Civil War era Iron Spidey suit.
But what could this possibly mean? Well, the nice thing about a project like Secret Wars, which is clearly dealing with time travel, alternate realities, and the like, is it affords Marvel Comics a chance to look back. Our best guess is this is not the only teaser we’ll get featuring a major event of recent years at Marvel. We wouldn’t be surprised to see a similar one for House of M #1 for example, or Fear Itself #1, or any other Marvel event - with the impetus being someone trying to prevent these, change the outcome of these, or something else to that effect.
Marvel likes tie-ins, and perhaps as part of Secret Wars we'll see a tie-in series or one-shot linked to other major Marvel events of the past. It's important to note the teaser does show an image of Civl War-era costumes and says "Civil War #1", and not "Civil War II #1."
For now, all we know is that something to do with Civil War is returning to Marvel Comics next Summer. But what we can figure out, especially thanks to President of Publishing Dan Buckley, is that “every story in every book is leading to Secret Wars,” as he said at New York Comic Con this past weekend. It doesn’t take a huge leap to extend that into while the event is running, too.
For their part, Marvel declined to comment further on the image.
