SECRET SIX IS HERE1 of 12This is the kinda-cheating intro entry to add an eleventh thing because that’s just how we roll sometimes. Since it’s already been announced, we felt weird about making the New 52 debut of Secret Six by Gail Simone into one of the actual ten entries. Alas, here we are.
Without further ado then, here are the other ten most important pieces of news, teases, and things we can’t wait to spend money on in DC Comics December 2014 solicitations.
CAPTAIN MARVEL IS BACK!2 of 12Grant Morrison. Cameron Stewart. Captain Marvel? Yes, he’s there in The Multiversity: Thunderworld, and he’s appearing in his original name, not his New 52 one of Shazam. The December issue of the worlds-spanning event series takes place on Earth-5, Thunderworld. It features Billy Batson, aka the world’s Mightiest Mortal Captain Marvel. Other members of the Marvel Family will appear as well as Mr. Mind, Dr. Sivana, and the Monster Society of Evil. And of course, It’ll all tie-in to the overarching story in Multiversity. SHAZAM!
DARKSEID IS BACK, TOO3 of 12Sure, next year Justice League enters the Darkseid war, but if you’re hankering for the Kirby god of anti-life sooner than that, you can turn to Earth 2: World’s End #10 and 11 in December. The weekly, the third DC Comics has launched in 2014, will see New Gods Mister Miracle and Big Barda leading the Earth 2 World Army in an invasion of Apokolips, literally taking the fight to Darkseid. Hey, maybe Earth 2 makes it out of this after all, and it’s just Apokolips that’s the titular world that’s ending. Yeah, we’re not betting on that, either.
AQUAMAN VS GRODD4 of 12It’s always fun to see villains fighting heroes who they aren’t typically associated with, and in December, it’s Grodd’s turn. Rather than fighting the fastest man alive, he’ll be taking on Aquaman this winter. Of course, Grodd has had more than a taste of the speed force, so something Flash-associated could happen here too. There’s literally no other information about this issue yet, but just seeing Aquaman and Grodd throw down is probably enough for most fans.
OH, THERE YOU ARE, SIMON BAZ5 of 12People have been asking about the status of Simon Baz and where he might show up next: he’ll be front-and-center toward the end of “Godhead,” the story mixing the Green Lantern family with the New Gods. In Infinity man and the Forever People #6, Baz will make the fight with Infinity man personal - making a light-construct Mecha Darkseid.
MORE JEFF LEMIRE ANIMAL MAN6 of 12Secret Origins #8 features another New 52 origin story for Dick Grayson by the new creative team of that series, plus a Katana origin form Ann Nocenti and Cliff Richards. But Animal Man fans will be excited to hear that Jeff Lemire and Travel Foreman are presenting the secret origin of Buddy Baker, the Animal Man. Sure, Lemire’s still writing Animal Man in the pages of Justice League United, but it’s nice to see a new solo story , especially since Lemire jumped into his tale midstream at the start of the New 52.
Oh, and for more secret origins, check out Grayson Annual #1 for the origin of the New 52 Helena Bertinelli, Dick’s partner!
CONSTANTINE ON EARTH-27 of 12If you want to know what’s happening with the Worlds War and the weekly series Earth 2: World’s End, there may be a surprising place to look: in the page of Constantine. We learned in the Futures End tie-in that John Constantine has a very specific moment coming up in the war. Now he’ll be traveling to Earth-2 in his own monthly series, and even meeting that Earth’s Constantine. With the drastic age difference, not to mention personality tweaks, between other heroes and their doubles, there’s no telling what this grumpy old curmudgeon might be like; or what secrets about the Worlds War we’ll learn. Make no mistake, this could very well be the most important non-event issue of the month.
SOMEBODY DIES8 of 12Yeah, yeah, so what’s new? And in this case we’re talking about the possible future of Futures End. Still, judging by the cover, some immediate suspects come to mind, especially one Kal-el, recently reintroduced in the series, and certainly someone that everyone pictured would be appropriately downtrodden about. Are we getting the Death of Superman redux?
MEET THE GRAYSONS9 of 12Barbara and Dick Grayson protect their son in Chicago in Earth 2 #29. Oh Earth 2, is there any fan service awesomeness you can’t do?
TEEN TITANS INCREASES THE ROSTER10 of 12Huh, it seems like just last week we were speculating that the new Power Girl might be joining the Teen Titans roster, and now the December solicitations for #5 say “the Titans take on a new team member!”
Of course, there is one wrench in the works here; the whole source of our speculation was that Teen Titans artist Kenneth Rocafort posted a picture with a drawing of the new PG alongside what sure looked like some other Titans. However, he’s not drawing December’s issue (only the cover), with Scott Hepburn stepping in. Still, if there’s an odds-on favorite, we’re keeping our bet on miss Tanya Spears.
ANOTHER CHANCE FOR A NEW FRONTIER11 of 12It’s awfully appropriate that in the same month DC Comics offers up several gorgeous Darwyn Cooke variant covers to their biggest titles, they also solicit (an advance solicitation for February 11, 2015, to be clear), a brand new DC: The New Frontier Deluxe Edition HC.
The story was Darwyn Cooke’s written and drawn take on the Silver Age of DC Comics. It’s the Justice League in about as classic and distilled to their iconic natures as can be. The new Deluxe Edition includes the one-shot Justice League: The New Frontier Special as well as the original mini-series. If you’re a fan of his variants this month and you haven’t read this book yet, it’s time to treat yourself. Save some of that holiday gift money, or ask for it from your honey for Valentine’s Day.
