The role of Ra's al Ghul, the main villain for Arrow's third season, will be played by Riddick star Matt Nable, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Nable will be introduced in this season's fourth episode, "The Magician, which airs October 29th, and will have a recurring role during the show's third season, which launches October 8th on The CW.
Fans of Arrow already knew that Ra's would be showing up in the series, but the casting of Nable puts a face to the role. Seeds for the villain's eventual role in Arrow have been planted since the first season.
In the comics, Ra's al Ghul is the leader of the League of Assassins, a master of martial arts and a ruthless strategist. In the TV show, the character will also be the father of Nyssa al Ghul, who's played on the show by Katrina Law.
The supernatural villain is often associated with Batman, having played a central antagonistic role in the 2005 film Batman Begins, played by Liam Neeson. But according to Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim, the show's writers and producers have put a unique twist on the character for his TV debut.
"We have a really clever way of doing Ra's this year that is true to the comic-book origins but different from the way Ra's was portrayed in the Nolan movies. You don't want to compete with Batman Begins, even though we've always said Batman Begins was a big influence on us," Guggenheim said. "We really wanted our Ra's to be very different — at least our own Arrow-ified version."
