The “Ruthless Vigilante” known as the Red Hood is coming to Batman: Arkham Knight, as a playable character in missions exclusive to US gamers who preorder at Gamestop. The missions will be part of an exclusive story mode, alongside the already announced story missions for Harley Quinn. Clearly in what has been said to be Rocksteady's final game in the series, they're trying to go all out.
A new addition to the Batman: Arkham game series lore, in comics the Red Hood is Jason Todd, the second Robin who in the classical DC continuity was killed by the Joker in the infamous late 1980s Death in the Family story arc.
After a shock tease that he might still be alive in the landmark Hush miniseries (elements of which have been adapted into the Arkham series already), Todd was resurrected on the page and took on the legacy persona of the Red Hood, at one time rumored to have been a pre-Joker Joker. In his new persona, he began to wage a significantly more aggressive war on crime then his former mentor, Batman. His unconventional methods have even been carried over into the New 52 in his own book: Red Hood and the Outlaws.
In the Arkham game universe there has been little hint of the existence of Jason Todd outside of oblique references to a ‘previous’ Robin made to Batman and the Tim Drake Robin (III) by the Joker and Harley Quinn during both Arkham Asylum and Arkham City as well as Nightwing’s (aka the first Robin Dick Grayson) appearance in DLC challenge maps.
Rather than the plastic helmet/skull mask this ‘new’ Red Hood has been giving the Arkham makeover, and while he still has his two guns, he is now garbed in white with a red Bat-symbol on his chest (as seen in his New 52 look) and a literal ‘red hoodie’ over his head and face.
Batman: Arkham Knight is set for a 2015 release on the new generation consoles and PC.
