The new Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes update to last year’s hit collectible toy/video game hybrid has a cosmic-level announcement to kick off Comic-Con International: San Diego Wednesday morning. Yes, as some had figured out from Rocket’s appearance in the initial teaser trailer, the Guardians of the Galaxy are coming to Disney Infinity 2.0, and they’re even getting their own Play Set with a unique story and play area designed around their appearance in comics and the upcoming live-action film (as you’ll see in the trailer, which plays off one of the popular scenes of the movie due in theaters August 1, 2014).

Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, Gamora, and Groot will team up at Knowhere as they fight off Ronan and the Sakaaran fleet – aspects taken directly from the movie. They’ll also get missions from characters like Cosmo the telepathic Russian dog, The Collector, and Yondu the leader of the Ravagers (and in comics one of the original Guardians). Crossover characters for the Play Set missions include Iron Man (from the Avengers Play Set) and Nova (from the Spider-Man Play Set).

This means fans don’t have to wait to see the team-up of the Avengers and the Guardians, as they can make those adventures themselves. Aside from the three unique Play Sets with their own story missions, this year’s edition sees some serious upgrades to the Toy Box 2.0, where players can craft their own worlds and games using any of the characters from both editions of Disney Infinity. Team-up Captain America, Elsa from Frozen, Spider-Man, and Rocket Raccoon as you and three friends fight-off an invasion of frost giants in the new “Attack on Asgard” Toy Box 2.0 game, along with other games being crafted by Disney Interactive for the series. Attack on Asgard is a classic Tower Defense style game mixed with a dash of the “Survival” mode popularly found in many shooters.

The Guardians of the Galaxy will also have Power Discs, of course, to further customize the play experience in both the Play Set and the Toy Box:

In addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy Play Set coming this Fall, Disney Interactive also released information and details about the special Sony-platform-only Collector’s Editions. The limited edition for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 will include the complete Disney Infinity 2.0 Avengers Play Set along with the starter pack – that means you get Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Captain America, and you get Hulk 30 days early, before he’s released as a stand-alone figure to the general public. At $179.99, the Collector’s Edition also includes a light-up diorama that can feature all six Avengers figures, plus a seventh spot for an unannounced character (let the speculation begin).

Sony and Disney Interactive are also teaming up for a PlayStation 3 hardware bundle for parents who aren’t ready to spend 400 bucks on a new generation system, featuring a PS3 with the Marvel Heroes starter pack including Thor, Iron Man, and Black Widow.
