It’s summertime, and many people are booking their annual vacations – and Marvel has some literally out-of-this-world recommendations.
Earlier today, a new travel site launched at www.TheGalaxyGetaways.com, purporting itself to be “the universe’s premiere travel company,” selling travel to extraterrestrial destinations across the universe. In actually, it’s a clever marketing effort by Marvel Entertainment to promote next month’s Guardians of the Galaxy film.
“Hawaii, Tahiti, the Bahamas… some of the most beautiful destinations on Earth… look like shit compared to the rest of the galaxy,” the website claims in a YouTube video. “How do we know? Because we’ve been there, done that. And now your journey is our job.”
The website for this fictional travel company is replete with destinations, images, and even Google street views of those destinations. At this time the destinations are limited to the Nova homeworld of Xandar, the alien planet Morag (seen in the trailer scene where Star-Lord grabbed the orb), and the head of a dead Celestial that in comics the Guardians call home, Nowhere.
Marvel has done immerse marketing campaigns before, such as Stark-branded USB sticks handed out at San Diego, and Fox’s massive viral campaign for X-Men: Days of Future Past has set the benchmark with fictional company websites, videos, and even social media accounts. We’re not saying Marvel is looking to eclipse that here to promote Guardians of the Galaxy, but hey --- wouldn’t you like to visit Xandar?
