Deathstroke returns to his own ongoing series in October, DC Comics announced Wednesday on MTV.com. The character, who had an ongoing series at the launch of the New 52 when the DC Universe was rebooted, has had a recent pop culture boost thanks to his appearance in last fall’s Batman: Arkham Origins and as the main villain for all of season 2 of the CW hit Arrow.

Now he takes the page once more in a solo ongoing series, coming from Tony S. Daniel, who will write the series and draw it along with Sandu Florea. In Daniel’s first interview on the project with MTV’s Alex Zalben, he said that he’s “always been a big Deathstroke fan,” and appreciates that the character has come more into the public eye through video games and TV. “I’ve always been drawn to characters with a dark side and I think that makes him complex and compelling,” Daniel furthered.

The character will continue on his mercenary ways, but will frequently be going up against “clearly evil bastards,” giving him more of a Punisher bent than in some previous stories. Daniel also promises to look into the man behind the mask, though. “The first half year of stories is very Slade-centric,” he teased. “There are people in his past that he’d rather not remember. I have a few surprises in store in this regard and a few surprises for Deathstroke, too.”

As for the rivalry so well-regarded on screen between Deathstroke and Green Arrow? “It does make me want to put Green Arrow and Deathstroke together at some point. I’m sure that’s in the cards down the road, and it doesn’t hurt that I’ve also been a long time Green Arrow fan. Will they work together or be enemies, that’s the question I’ll have the answer to if and when we get to that point,” the writer-artist said.
