The X-Men have had their share of shocking new members, but never any like this. Last weekend Brian Michael Bendis posted an illustration by Sara Pichelli pruported to be the uncolored cover to All-New X-Men #32. The cover, which Bendis noted "this is real!," shows the Miles Morales, the Spider-Man of Marvel's Ultimate line, as joining the X-Men team.

The cover is a homage to a classic cover announcing another surprise recruit into the X-Men, 1980's Uncanny X-Men #139 by John Byrne, featuring Kitty Pryde's inclusion into the team along with a statement that's become engrained in X-Men lore. "Welcome to the X-Men. Hope you survive the experience!"

Newsarama reached out to Marvel for confirmation, and on Tuesday morning they declined to comment.

If this cover is revealed to be true, it has several possible meanings. The Ultimate universe's Miles Morales has crossed over with the classic Marvel universe's characters in the minsieries Spider-Man, which saw Peter Parker go to the Ultimate universe and interact with Morales. At the end of that series once Parker returned to the classic Marvel universe, he discovered that a Miles Morales existed in his home universe but has yet to be followed up on.
