It’s only April, and it’s already nothing short of a banner year for Batman Beyond. The character has a new short made by Darwyn Cooke, Terry McGinnis is being integrated into the full New 52 continuity in the weekly comic Futures End, and the ongoing digital-first series has just about reached its six-month anniversary since relaunching as Batman Beyond 2.0.
To celebrate in that series, writer Kyle Higgins has teamed up with the writer of the other half of the “Beyond-Verse,” Justice League Beyond 2.0 writer Christos N. Gage. The two are in the midst of a crossover story that brings back the Justice Lords – a group of alternate-reality Justice Leaguers who took over their Earth thinking they knew best long before Injustice made it cool for a new generation.
We spoke briefly with Higgins during the busy C2E2 weekend to catch up on Batman Beyond and share a couple of teases about what’s coming next, now that Terry has shunted over to the Justice Lords’ home turf.
Newsarama: You just couldn’t get away from Dick Grayson, could you? So now you’re playing with not one, but two of him across parallel Earths – what is it about this character that keeps you exploring his aspects, even after leaving present-day-DCU-Grayson behind?
Kyle Higgins: Well, in this case, his inclusion comes from the nature of the story – we’re inverting the current status quo and showing an alternate timeline. Since Dick Grayson is so prominent in our Batman Beyond series, it makes sense to show what his alternate timeline version is up to.
That and, you know, he is my favorite character… (laughs).
Nrama: How early were you and Christos working together on this crossover of the Beyond books? Has it required any specific special coordination, or how has the story come together for you?
Higgins: Pretty early. In fact, a few months into the series, he came over and we watched all the Justice Lord episodes of the animated series… just to go through them together and brainstorm for this crossover. There may or may not have been pizza and beer involved.
Nrama: A character seeing “How things might’ve been” is a rare opportunity – what do you hope Terry learns from his experiences on the other Earth?
Higgins: There’s a moment coming up in chapter 20 that really sums this up for me. I mean, keep in mind… Terry was heading down a pretty bad path before he became Batman. So, this alternate version of Terry is a nice look at the person he could have been. So far, it’s been anything but reassuring.
Nrama: What’s a specific character interaction or moment that has surprised you in this story – especially if it’s something coming up you’re excited for fans to see?
Higgins: Dick and Barbara, married couple. At least it worked out in one timeline! (laughs). The other big moment that sticks out to me is in chapter 20, a conversation between Terry and T. Oh, and the finale of 21. It’s CRAZY. I can’t wait for people to see it.
