The thorn in Picard's side is about to meet a new old captain of the Enterprise.
Yes, Q is returning to the world of Star Trek, but this time he'll be dealing with Captain James Tiberius Kirk. In a new six-part comic book story that IDW Publishing is calling the "Star Trek event of the summer," the mischievious and sometimes downright devious Q enters the new movie universe continuity. Debuting in July's Star Trek #35, the god-like being will retain the likeness of John de Lancie, the actor who portrayed him on Star Trek: The Next Generation in several appearances, including that series' debut.
“Part of the fun of the new Star Trek movie franchise is seeing how beloved characters are different in the new timeline,” says writer Mike Johnson in a press release. “But one iconic adversary remains unchanged: Q. His fascination with humanity and his penchant for mischief remain the same across the multiverse, and now he's come to take the Enterprise crew on an adventure that will bring new meaning to the phrase ‘no-win scenario!’”
"The Q Gambit" will be drawn by Tony Shasteen, who is joining the Star Trek franchise for the first time after two high-profile digital-first gigs with DC Comics.
The announcement also hinted that we may see some other Star Trek faces from a bygone era, specifically saying that Kirk and the Enterprise will meet "the crew of a certain space station..." Could that station be in, say, Deep Space? We'll find out in July 2014.
