All the major Hollywood trades are reporting Monday evening that Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods, World War Z) is in final negotiations to direct Sony’s Sinister Six spin-off from Amazing Spider-Man. Goddard was previously announced as writing the script.
Sinister Six and Venom, also previously announced as being written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Ed Solomon and directed by Kurtzman , are both being produced to not only create more tent-pole properties for Sony, but to also prevent the Spider-Man live action rights from reverting back to Marvel Studios.
Goddard, Kurtzman, Orci, Solomon and screenwriter Jeff Pinkner will all be collaborating on writing both the spin-offs along with Amazing Spider-Man 3 (June 10, 2016) and 4 (May 4, 2018). The five writers, along with Amazing 1, 2 and 3 director Marc Webb, and producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, make up a “brain trust” whose role it is to guide and expand the Sony Spider-franchise and to develop a house tone and plotlines that run throughout the films.
If or how this will affect Daredevil, Marvel Studios upcoming co-production with Netflix, remains to be seen. In early December Marvel Studios officially announced Goddard as the writer and director of the pilot , as well as showrunner and executive producer for the entire 13-episode series, announced for a 2015 premiere.
