Diamond Comic Distributors released their February 2014 comic book sales and market share charts Friday morning and like last month , the figures again suggest the comic book Direct Market growth trend that began in Fall 2011 may have reached its peak.

Batman #28 and Forever Evil #5 led the pace in comic book sales; Wolverine #1 was Marvel's bestselling comic book; and two issues of the Walking Dead - #121 & 122 and part of the “All-Out War” arc celebrating of the 10th anniversary of the series - cracked the Top 10.

IDW's Locke & Key Volume 6: Alpha & Omega hardcover, the final in the series, topped the graphic novel charts.

Marvel led both market share categories, 34.10% in dollar share and 37.36% in unit share. DC was of course #2 in both categories, with 28.73% and 31.12% in dollar and unit share, respectively.

And while graphic novel sales posted 2.83% dollar and 14.99% unit gains over February 2013, comic book sales were down in double figures versus the same period last year - -10.39% in dollar sales and -14.77% in unit sales.

Overall dollar sales are down -5.89% year-to-date in 2014 versus 2013. Given what was more bad weather across much of North America in February, it's probably too early to call the sales growth trend of the last 2.5 years definitively over, but certainly the early 2014 trend bears watching.

Here is Comichron's initial take on February sales, reprinted with permission:

"February appears to be returning to form. The release of Diamond Comic Distributors' February data was delayed this month by snow days and other scheduling issues, and the unusually harsh winter appears to have cast a chill on comics sales for the month. Comics shops in North America ordered close to $37 million in new comic books, graphic novels, and magazines in February, down 6.71% from a year ago. The figure is still up 3% from February 2012.

"February has historically been either the lowest or second-lowest volume sales month for the Direct Market: publishers in the past have tend to offer fewer titles than at other times of the year, and customers (and sometimes the comics!) have more difficulty reaching stores. This month saw 692 new releases, the first time in months that figure has been below 700. There were 30 fewer graphic novels released in February versus in January; more comics were released, but fewer magazines.

"Comics sales were off nearly 15% in units and more than 10% in dollars: Batman #28 was the leader of the list.

"Graphic novel dollars were up 2.83% over a year ago. Unit sales were led by the Locke & Key Vol. 6: Alpha and Omega hardcover. Based on its position in the unit sales rankings, odds are the $75 Infinity hardcover may come in at or near the top of the list in dollar sales. Graphic novel units were up by a much greater amount, which suggests that this month again had a high volume of graphic novels sold at greater-than-usual discounts."
