The population count for Fox's Gotham series just got a new resident: Jada Pinkett Smith. The Matrix star has been hired to play a newly introduced character, Fish Mooney, who acts as a nightclub owner and the ruthless boss of the future Penguin, Oswald Cobblepot. Smith joins a cast which includes Donal Logue, Ben McKenzie, Sean Petrwee and others, with production set to begin March in New York City with plans to debut the series in late 2014
Although Pinkett Smith's character is a new creation never before seen in the DC Comics Gotham is based on, this wouldn't be the actress first-time starting in a comic-related production. In 1995 she starred in the film Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight, which was based on the earlier HBO series that was adapted from the classic EC Comics' series of the same name.
And while the Fish Mooney character seems to be a new creation, it is possible that the last name, "Mooney," is an homage to long-time DC artist Jim Mooney who started his career there as an uncredited ghost artist for Bob Kane in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
