The ABC television series Revenge made a name for itself with nuanced and layered storytelling that comics have been doing for decades, and now the primetime mystery/thriller is coming to comics to tell more of its story.
Today Marvel Entertainment announced that it is partnering with ABC Studios on an all-new original graphic novel based on the hit television series, titled Revenge: The Secret Origin of Emily Thorne. The television series stars Emily VanCamp as the titular Emily Thorne, and follows her as she enters the haughty Hampton social scene seeking to uncover the truth behind her father being framed for a crmie and eventually murdered. In this OGN coming September 3, series writer Ted Sullivan joins with co-writer Erica Schultz and artist Vincenzo Balazno as they explore an earlier chapter in Thorne's revenge set in Switzerland but with ties to her adversaries in the present-day events of the television show.
"Emily’s meticulous and vengeful path was not without a learning curve," Schultz is quoted as saying in the press release. "This story takes us way back to before Emily had any experience in her ‘takedowns’. She makes mistakes. She learns from some of them, but, as you'll see, she has a hard time learning some lessons and fans of the show will be pleased to pick up on a few Easter Eggs hidden here and there.”
Revenge: The Secret Origin of Emily Thorne is the latest in a growing line of comic series and graphic novels based on television properties that Marvel has been producing since it was acquired by the Walt Disney Company in 2009. Marvel has published several volumes of original comics based on ABC's Castle, as well an anthology inspired by Once Upon A Time and a spinoff of HBO's Dexter written by series creator Jeff Lindsay.
Sullivan, who is writer of both the television series and this forthcoming graphic novel, says that Emily Thorne is an ideal character to appear in comic books -- especially at Marvel.
