The New York Toy Fair 2014 has officially kicked off, thanks to a Hasbro preview event that had plenty to reveal. While we'll have more from the event soon, including Transformers, Marvel, and much more from the Star Wars line, today I had to rush home to tell you about the new Star Wars Rebels toys, which reveal new characters.
First up: a mysterious female Mandalorian who is allied with the Rebels we've already met. While no name was listed for the character on the box art, we saw her clearly on a box for "Star Wars: Command," a new line of miniatures that are styled off the classic "army men" toys. The line will feature figures from multiple eras of Star Wars, including films, The Clone Wars, and now, Rebels.
This figure is clearly on the side of the Rebels, pictured with characters like Ezra (more on him in a minute), Kanan, and the droid Chopper, along with another character not yet officially revealed, Zeb (again, more on him in a bit).
We also confirmed through her actual figurine that she is indeed a "good guy." According to a Hasbro rep on hand (who said he couldn't reveal her name), all of the Star Wars: Command figurines are coded as good and bad by their base. The "bad guys" have hexagonal bases, and the "good guys" have oval ones - this female Mandalorian has a clearly round base, as shown in this picture.
We expect more on her, and on Zeb, on Monday.
Zeb, meanwhile, was announced as a character on the Rebels that is based off the original Ralph McQuarrie design for Chewbacca, as seen in "The Star Wars" at Dark Horse Comics. He is being released in both the Command line, and in a "Saga Legends" line in a 3.75" figure.
New close ups of the Kanan and Inquisitor figures better show those characters, along with Kanan's new lightsaber hilt. The Inquisitor's lightsaber was confirmed to split into two separate sabers, so he can either dual-wield or hold it as one staff.
Agent Kallus is a new Imperial Agent character also introduced in the Saga Legends first wave. Hasbro would not give any more details about the character, but judging by him being called "Agent" and not another rank, it seems he'll be more of a covert operative, as seen in comics and the video game The Old Republic.
Finally, on the above Star Wars: Command box and in the Saga Legends figure, we get a closer look at Ezra, the young force-sensitive character, and his odd looking lightsaber. The hilt of his saber has a handguard on it. It almost looks like it was cobbled together from a blaster, but that's just conjecture - Hasbro assured us that the odd look will be directly addressed in the series. It is interesting to see that as well as being force-sensitive, he'll be wielding a lightsaber early in the show.
Incidentally, while they did not have them on display, Star Wars Rebels branded R2D2 and C-3PO figures were shown at the presentation, with the announcement that they will appear in the show.
A couple of ships were on display, as well, including a nice look at The Inquisitor's TIE Advanced Starfighter. The design, as detailed at New York Comic Con 2013, is based on early McQuarrie TIE designs, as well. A walker and The Phantom, Ezra's ship, were also on display.
There were also Rebels costume pieces on display, but more on them later. More on Star Wars Rebels and Toy Fair, as well as more Star Wars toys coming soon.
