If the new console generation coupled with the holiday shopping season has drained your Peter Porker: the Spectacular Spider-Ham piggy bank, the world of mostly free-to-play Comic Book MMOs are continuing to churn out new content for their players. Here’s the latest on three big free-to-play games from Marvel and DC.
The PC click-fest Marvel Heroes continues its version 2.0 resurgence with the opening of the Asgard region which features the game's first PvP combat mode: the MOBA-style Fire vs. Ice. In the new mode, two teams of five battle each other alongside allied drones seeking to bust through waves of defenses on a linear map that encourages huge battles. Players can boost their team for PvP powers using runes earned though combat.
Gambit is the most recent addition to the player character roster (with Domino replacing him as a NPC vendor) available for purchase, rare drop or though the game's free/loyalty-earned currency, while a certain motorcycle enthusiast with a flaming skull is shortly in the offing. The developers have also recently announced a massive buy-ahead pack of the heroes (and villains!) on their release slate for all of 2014 including Dr. Strange, the Juggernaut, Magneto, Moon Knight, Nightcrawler, Psylocke, Silver Surfer, Star-Lord, The Invisible Woman, Venom plus two more unannounced characters. The 2014 “Advance Pack” comes in a $100 and $130 flavor – the standard edition includes 12 characters, 36 fortune cards, 12 Retcons, and 12 Stash Tabs, while the deluxe edition adds an extra costume for all 12, Gambit’s Death of the 4 Horsemen costume, Wolverine “Fear Itself” costume, and double the fortune cards and Retcons.
Finally, fan favorite character Kate Bishop is coming in the form of a Jim Cheung-style skin for Hawkeye, complete with new voice and custom animations (similar to the Superior Spider-Man variant for Spidey), joining the already available Santa-outfit for Squirrel Girl and New X-Men Cyclops.
DC Universe Online
DCUO continues its exportation into the Emotional Spectrum in their ninth DLC set: War of the Light Part I, the first part of a planned trilogy. The Blue and Red Lantern Corps will be the focus of this content as Saint Walker and Atrocitus join the Legends PvP mode, new four and eight player Operations will be available and the red ring related Rage power set will be available for both heroic and villainous player characters.
Senior Creative Director for DC Universe Online Jens Andersen describes the content in a press release. "War of the Light Part I will let players explore new and reimagined environments in DCUO. They will notice changes to Metropolis, which has been affected by this new war of light, and for the first time they will journey to Mogo, the sentient Green Lantern Planet, and Ranx, the Sentient Sinestro Corps City.”
This DLC pack will be a free download for the game's Legendary members in January and will be available later this winter for purchase by Free and Premium players.
Continuing its lengthy Beta (apply for it here), Infinite Crisis continues to add new characters, called Champions, into its pan-DC Universe MOBA title. This past month sees the inclusion of the Harley Quinn of Earth-Prime and the Mecha Wonder Woman of Earth-44. Robin is the latest feature announcement, as well, announced this week.
Befitting of her character, Harley plays mostly as a ranged harasser and in a support role in Infinite Crisis. Her pop guns and pie attacks deal damage from afar, while her oversized mallet knocks back anyone who comes too close. She also can heal and provide a passive buff to allies when she is engaged in battle.
Coming from a world where all the heroes and villains are robots, Mecha Wonder Woman (aka the Themysciran diplomatic robot designated D1A-NA) is focused on delivering ranged damage with her default and three of her four special attacks are dedicated to dealing death from a distance including an ultimate that recalls an anime-style missile barrage.
