The PlayStation 4 edition of Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition is “the definitive edition” of the game, NetherRealm Senior Producer Adam Urbano told us during Sony’s PS4 launch press event.
“This is the only version running native in 1080p at 60 frames per second,” Urbano declared proudly. But they didn’t just increase the fidelity artificially. The team actually went back into every asset in the game, from weapons to characters, from alternate costumes to set pieces, and “pulled out textures at four times the resolution” of the PlayStation 3 edition. “There is no anti-aliasing, it just looks in general really clean and tight compared to the PS3 version.”
They did also take advantage of the new features of the PS4, though – it’s not all just a pretty paint job.
“The video sharing for the PS4, especially for this game, is awesome. You can have a pro tournament with your buddies and stream it on Twitch or Ustream. It’s great, especially for a fighting game, that really works out well.”
There is also one piece of PlayStation 4 exclusive content, a New 52 skin for Black Adam. “You're the first person I've told this, actually! It’s Black Adam’s first skin, and the only way to get it is by playing it on PS4.”
NetherRealm also praised the new DualShock 4 controller, saying the D-pad on the redesigned device makes for much better fighting game input. The new touchpad on the top of the controller is also used in some of the S.T.A.R. Labs challenge missions in the game. “You can swipe and use new gestures and inputs in a whole bunch of those,” Urbano said. While there are also touch-based challenges on the portable PlayStation Vita edition, though, Urbano said they actually differ between the two versions “to keep things fresh.”
Urbano said that the Ultimate Edition came so soon (in the same year) after the original simply as an effort to get all the additional content they’ve produced out to as many fans as possible.
“This is the most DLC we’ve ever done for a single game. There are six character, 40 skins, 60 new S.T.A.R. labs missions, zombie mode, there is a ton of content. If you have a PS4, you want to get this version,” Urbano declared.
The mobile edition on iOS does link up with the PS4 edition as well, with all your unlocks from playing the mobile game transferring over immediately – including that aforementioned Black Adam New 52 skin.
“Short of the mobile unlocks, though, everything else is unlocked when you play the game for the first time – it’s all available immediately. All the skins, all the S.T.A.R. Labs missions, even some of the battle ladders that are really hard – they’re all unlocked from the start.”
Newsarama would like it on the record that Editor Lucas Siegel defeated two NetherRealm developers in two out of three games during this interview. It's all about Aquaman, folks.
