VILLAINS MONTH Takes Over SEPTEMBER SALES For Big DC Win & Overall Big Industry Gain

Providing more evidence that publishing 'events'/'stunts' work (despite often vocal complaining by comic book readers on the Internet), DC Comics notched a huge win on the September 2013 sales charts due to what now appears to be an annual September New 52 event.

This year Villains Month and the start of their Forever Evil limited series and the '3-D motion' covers featured on each of those titles was the centerpiece of a month that saw an overall industry sales increase of more than 25% over last month and more than 23% over September 2012 sales, when DC rolled out their Zero Month event.

According to data released by Diamond Comic Distributors Friday morning, DC Comics scored 45.17% in Unit share and 40.39% in Dollar share, compared to Marvel's 29.83% and 28.49% share in those respective categories.

In a press release DC identified their own Unit sales to be "4.3 million comic books sold."

And thanks to Diamond's new 'New Titles Shipped' chart (below), you can see a significant portion of DC's big month is due to them shipping 155 new titles to Direct Market comic book stores in September to Marvel's 99, including almost doubling their comic book output 129 to 67.

Of course it can also be argued DC also left money on the table for themselves and comic book retailers, given the publisher was unable to meet the retail demand for the 3-D motion covers that were offered for every one of the 53 Villains Month-related titles, with the quantities that did ship allocated in smaller numbers than ordered for many of the titles.

Forever Evil #1 was September's top-selling comic book, with Marvel's Infinity #2 and #3 taking the next two spots. Overall, DC and Marvel actually split the Top 10 5-to-5.

The best-selling graphic novel of the month was Image's East of West Volume 1: The Promise trade paperback from Jonathan Hickman (also writer of Marvel's Infinity) and Nick Dragotta.

Overall, the DC event help sales rebound from what was a rare down month in August , again with September 2013 gaining nearly 27% in Dollars sales over the previous month, and 23.40% over September 2012, with comic book sales (due to the DC event) accounting for the vast majority of those gains.

2013 year-to-date sales gains now stand at 10.43% over 2012.
