Yesterday we had word via Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Paul Giamatti (who plays Rhino) that there would be several villains in next year’s sequel beyond just him and Jamie Foxx’s Electro. But now we learn via Chris Cooper, the franchise’s Green Goblin / Norman Osborn, that the other villains – teasing the Sinister Six – may be minor roles leading to something bigger down the road.
In an interview with Access Hollywood’s Scott Mantz, Cooper revealed his role in 2014’s Amazing Spider-Man 2 is an “introduction to Norman Osborn” with “better things” down the road in Amazing Spider-Man 3, currently set for release in 2016.
As Cooper explains it, in next year’s movie Osborn will be seen “on his last legs,” although the actor said he couldn’t expand on it past that.
Although Giamatti’s Rhino and Foxx’s Electro look to be dominating the screen in Amazing Spider-Man 2, Cooper’s role as Green Goblin looks to be the tip of the iceberg in terms of other villains coalescing, with previous hints towards the formation of the Sinister Six. It has already been revealed that the comics prison Ravencroft Institute will be featured in the film, with on-set photos revealing a plaque dedicated to Thomas Warren – the real name of the Spidey villain the Jackal. Thor’s Colm Feore reportedly plays Adrian Toomes, the civilian identity of the Vulture, and The Office’s B.J. Novak has an as-yet unspecified role as well.
