SOE LIVE 2013: Sons of Trigon Summons Supernatural to DCUO, Hints at PS4

At the annual Sony Online Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada, the developers of the MMO DC Universe Online revealed details of their latest expansion that will take players to a twisted version of an iconic DC city that is already well familiar with darkness. In "Sons of Trigon," a dangling sub-plot that has lingered in the game's lore since the title's initial release is addressed; the forces of good were able to block the emergence of the pan-dimensional demon Trigon onto Earth at the last moment, and now it's revealed that the evil entity has been trapped in a mirror Gotham City that has become a twisted wasteland under the influence of him and his seven 'sons.'
DCUO's development team cites Trigon's original visual designer, comics Legendary George Perez, as the starting point for how this Gotham Wasteland would look, “We took elements from the original vision of Trigon and elements from the game and blended them together to see what they would look like, there was a lot of back and forth, a lot of concepts to arrive where we are now.”
Taken on a literal fly-thru of this hellish version of Gotham, attendees could see locations like the football stadium, the Amusement Mile District and most impressively the Gotham City Cathedral almost completely redesigned with Dante-esque sense in mind.
The 'sons,' partially responsible for this are sons in name only, as the hero Raven is counted in their number; each represent one of the Seven Deadly Sins and seek to complete a ritual to unlock their father's power for their own use (Raven, representing Pride, has had her soul self split and struggles with the 'selfish' notion that she'd fight against her nature). As the gameplay of DCUO itself is split between the sides of good and evil, the player character will side with either Wonder Woman and the Sentinels of Magic to contain Trigon, or Circe and the Council of Twelve to harvest the demon for their own ends.
Built with a PvE experience in mind, Sons of Trigon features daily solo missions, missions designed for players to take on in pairs, and a climatic battle with Trigon himself in the form of a four player alert. An element of randomness has been added as well, from quasi-rogue-like instance maps, to ever-changing guest star characters within instances. In the example shown to attendees, the villainous player character encounters and battles Zatanna while making his way though a maze, the developer described how this encounter could also involve a range of characters from just a higher level goon, to any of the Teen Titans who were drawn to this alternate Gotham thanks to their connection with teammate Raven.
Again, keeping with the heroes and villains dynamic of DCUO, a heroic character could now encounter a number of new additions to the game's roster: The Fearsome Five, including Mammoth, Gizmo, Jinx and Psimon (not to be confused with Brainiac). Another new group of characters will fascinate fans of the lore of the DC Universe. As you progress though one mission in this alternate Gotham, you will travel through a mausoleum and be confronted with the angry spirits of the people buried there, including members of the most prominent families in Gotham history. You will trade blows with the Falcones, the Cobblepots and even get a chance to punch the ghost of Thomas and Martha Wayne. Once more, you can punch the ghost of Thomas and Martha Wayne.
Keeping with the supernatural theme of the expansion, a new power set is going to be rolled out: Celestial, with focuses on a bless/curse dynamic that can heal characters or potentially debuff them. Added to the Legends PvP mode is Cheetah (“The first speedster in the mode, which we hope could lead to members of the Flash Family to be added,” teased DCUO Executive Producer Larry Liberty) and Donna Troy. Fashion focused heroes/villains can also equip new gear based on Raven and Brother Blood's looks.
Finally, with the dawn of a new console age almost upon us, more information was revealed about DCUO's future with the PlayStation 4. “We won't go [with a new] retail [release],” describes Liberty, “We like digital distribution, it really simplifies thing. We are getting new key art and we are going to have a new UI [user interface] across all platforms. It's almost like a reboot that comes as a direct result of the PS4's development. The PS4 is going to be very big for us.”
Sons of Trigon will be free for Legendary players and for purchase by Free and Premium players this fall.
