The first paid DLC for the video game version of the ambitious transmedia experiment that is Defiance (it’s both a persistent-world video game and an ongoing TV series on SyFy) was showcased in the plush Trion Worlds private meeting room at E3 2013. Called the Castithan Charge Pack, it first and foremost fulfills one desire for the players currently enjoying the game: a new playable race.

For the first time players will be able to play as the (literally) white skinned Votans known as Castithans. However, this won’t just be open to new characters, but in an unusual but welcome move, they will also be allowed to swap out their leveled up player characters' race for this new one if they desire.

This DLC will also add a new game-specific storyline of the player character trying to raise their status in the rigid Castithan class-system. Due to the nature of the game, it will clearly be by killing a lot of things rather than the kind of scheming seen done by the Castithan characters that appear on the SyFy Channel version of the property.

The paid update will also add the war-like Volge to the game as enemies, and they will be featured in the game's dynamic Arkfall over-world events where they might have some of their notoriously large and dangerous mecha, like the type that guards the Golden Gate bridge. A new open-world game mode called "Sieges" is also included in both the paid and free versions of the DLC.

Trion has seen how popular the single player experience has been for the game, and will add with this DLC more one-player arenas in addition to new charge-able weapons (pistols, sniper rifles and shotguns) that deliver a bigger punch if the wielder is patient. Finally, melee weapons will make their debut in the form of Castithan Charge Blades (as seen on the show) that will come in a variety of colors, and should look very familiar to fans of a certain other space epic.

No firm release date or price point has yet been given, though this first pack will hit "before the end of July" this year. The season one finale of Defiance airs on SyFy Monday July 8, 2013. The series has already been given a second season order.
