According to Comichron, the special Barack Obama cover of 2009’s Amazing Spider-Man #583 (see below) is by far the bestselling comic book of the 21st century (an estimated 530.5k copies) and it looks like IDW is looking to recapture some of that sales magic.

The publisher is offering a special variant cover by artist Dave Dorman featuring the second term President for its new September-debuting series The Other Dead – a spin on the zombie genre featuring Earth’s animal life turning into the flesh-craving monsters.

“A motley cast of characters has no choice but to battle the dead, using a hefty amount of firepower and whatever else is at their disposal,” reads IDW’s description of the series by the creative team of Joshua Ortega (Gears of War), Digger T. Mesch (Agent 88), and Kevin Eastman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).

The debut issue premieres September 11 2013, a date made very clear on the special incentive variant cover, and features Obama brandishing two semi-automatic firearms, a noteworthy selection in this charged political environment.

The cover will be available to comic book retailers on a 100 copies ordered-10 variant copies included basis.

The original artwork (sans trade dress) will also be available for sale at Dorman’s booth at Comic-Con later this month.
