Fantagraphics co-publisher Kim Thompson passed away Wednesday, according to the publisher's website. He was 56.

Thompson joined Fantagraphics soon after its inception in 1976. His editing credits include celebrated works like Acme Novelty Library, Hate, Castle Waiting and Palestine, plus anthology titles Critters and Zero Zero. Thompson, born in Denmark and raised in Europe, brought translated versions of European cartoonists' work to America, including Jason, Jacques Tardi, Ulli Lust and Guy Peelaert.

He also contributed extensively to Fantagraphics' noted periodical publications, The Comics Journal and Amazing Heroes.

"He was my partner and close friend for 36 years," Fantagraphics co-founder Gary Groth said in the publisher's statement.

Thompson announced in March of this year that he had lung cancer. Fantagraphics' obituary states that he's survived by his wife, Lynn Emmert, his mother and father, Aase and John, and his brother Mark.
