Deadline is reporting Thursday Warner Bros. Pictures and Archie Comics have closed a deal to produce a live-action movie "packaged" by talent firm WME based on the long-time teenage/high school comic book franchise. Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) will reportedly direct and playwright, screenwriter, and sometimes comic book writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is writing.
According to the online Hollywood trade the Archie screenplay envisions a “high school comedy based on the original line of Archie Comics set in present day Riverdale.”
Seemingly speculating further, however, Deadline reports they "find it hard to believe that zombies won’t play a role in the new movie somehow," given Aguirre-Sacasa is also the announced writer of the Archie/zombie mash-up Afterlife with Archie that will debut later this year.
While it remains to be seen if that will be the case and if Deadline is cagily tipping some inside info, adding some subjective speculation of our own we gotta wonder if Deadline's radar is on the fritz on that one.
