There have been several varying reports on which character will plague the Guardians of the Galaxy in the 2014 Marvel Studios live-action feature film, and on Tuesday JoBlo.com cited an unnamed source saying the movie's villain will be Ronan the Accuser.
Ronan, first introduced by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1967's Fantastic Four #65, is a prominent member of the Marvel Universe's Kree alien race, and while frequently depicted as a villain, has recently been portrayed as more of a hero in stories like Annihilators.
The Ronan report is sourced anonymously and unconfirmed, and it should be strictly considered a "rumor" at this point, as speculation will likely continue as to who will be the film's main villain until official word comes from Disney and Marvel. Last month, The Hollywood Reporter stated that Ophelia Lovibond would be playing "an aide to a near-immortal being called The Collector," with the article later edited to read "Details of Lovibond’s role are being kept in the farther reaches of deep space, home of Marvel's security bunker."
Also in April, Pushing Daisies star Lee Pace was reported by The Wrap to be playing "the villain" in the film, though his role wasn't specified. The Controller, a character closely associated with Thanos in the comic books, has also been rumored to play a part in the movie.
Guardians of the Galaxy, written and directed by James Gunn and starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista, is scheduled for release on Aug. 1, 2014.
