MAN OF STEEL Comes Early, IRON MAN 3 Goes Global
Warners-Walmart Strike MAN OF STEEL DealConfident enough in the film to try help jumpstart a word-of-mouth campaign, or getting in some box office in before the reviews hit?
You can look at Warner Bros. deal with Walmart to exclusively sell tickets to a pre-opening day screening of Man of Steel either way.
The film, which opens Friday, June 14, will have special advance screening around the country at 7pm on June 13th, with tickets going on sale in 3,700 Walmart locations starting at 8am on May 18.
Moviegoers will be able to purchase up to four tickets per visit, and have the option to choose between 2D or 3D showings, assuming 3D is an option in their area.
Walmart will also offer additional Man of Steel swag to customers, including an exclusive original digital comic book written by Man of Steel screenwriter David Goyer that comes with the purchase of a ticket, along with merchandise, an official “Man of Steel Experience” mobile app, and a chance to pre-order the eventual Blu-ray Combo Pack or HD Digital Download.
The promotion is thought to be the first time a movie studio has teamed up with a retailer to sell movie tickets.
“We couldn’t be more excited to give our customers and associates early access to one of the summer’s most anticipated movies,” said Walmart U.S. Senior VP Entertainment Laura Phillips in a statement. “Walmart’s premiere of Man of Steel once again proves we have the ambition and studio partnerships to develop unique retail programs that give our customers access to the movies they love.”
Added Warner Domestic Distribution President Dan Fellman: “We are extremely pleased to partner with Walmart on this unprecedented initiative, which will allow devoted fans to be among the first to see Man of Steel. We know the movie delivers and believe this unique partnership will kick off strong word of mouth that, thanks to the reach and immediacy of social media, will propel moviegoers to theaters nationwide.”IRON MAN 3 Gets U.S.-China Joint Premiere Date Marvel and Disney have secured a May 3 premiere for Iron Man 3 in China, meaning the film will open in North America and China simultaneously.
The film opens in many foreign markets this week.
Those who’ve followed the film’s production know it’s a joint production of Marvel Pictures and the Beijing-based DMG Entertainment.
The standard cut of the film features scenes in Beijing, product placement for Chinese electronics manufacturer TCL, and an appearance by Chinese actor Wang Xueqi, but a special Chinese-only version will feature additional footage set in China, along with an appearance by popular Chinese actress and soon-to-be X-Men: Days of Future Past co-star Fan Bingbing.
As one of the fat-growing box office territories, China will continue to grow in importance to Hollywood studios. Disney has pulled out all the stops promoting in the film in China and a huge box office opening there will help drive the press/blogger narrative of Iron Man 3 being a monster global hit, a direction we’re seemingly headed in already.
