Michael Rooker looks to be moving from one comic book-based project to another, as The Walking Dead's Merle has been cast in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy film, according to Deadline. The site reports that Rooker will play Yondu, an alien hero dating back to 1969's Marvel Super-Heroes #18, the first appearance of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Yondu was an original member of the initial incarnation of the team, heroes from the 31st century. Created by Arnold Drake and Gene Colan, the character also appeared in the Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning-written, 2008-debuting Guardians of the Galaxy series, which serves as major inspiration for the film. Rooker would be joining a cast including Parks and Recreation's Chris Pratt as Star-Lord and former WWE champion Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer. Earlier this month, it was reported that Zoe Saldana was in negotiations for the role of Gamora. Guardians of the Galaxy, written and directed by James Gunn, is scheduled for release on Aug. 1, 2014.
