The Stars of Dinicartoons: Jingle Belle

The Stars of Dinicartoons: Jingle Belle

EDITOR'S NOTE: Newsarama is hosting writer Paul Dini as he introduces the various characters who are center stage in his new "Dinicartoons" imprint at Top Cow. The imprint kicks off with the release of Jingle Belle: Santa Claus vs. Frankenstein this Thursday, Devember 4th.

CHARACTER: Jingle Belle

FIRST APPEARANCE: Oni (Dini) Double Feature #13

In most stories Santa Claus has no children. There’s Mrs. Claus, the elves, the reindeer and that’s about it. Then about 10 years ago I started thinking, if Santa had kids in today’s modern world, what would they be like? Here’s this guy who means so much to the kids of the world, but around the house, he’s just plain dad. How does his own kid relate him, warts and all? With that in mind, the rest of Jingle Belle’s character quickly fell into place.

In my own skewed mythology, Jingle Belle is the daughter of Santa Claus and Mirabelle, AKA Mrs. Claus, the former queen of the Northern Elves. Even though she is the progeny of a saintly icon and an elf, Jing is a basic teen girl. She likes snowboarding, hanging out with her friends and going on dates, and she’s really kind of done with that whole “making toys for kids” business. She’s at that age (16 in elf years = 150 in human years) when she’s embarrassed by her mom and dad’s preoccupation with Christmas. It’s not that she hates the holidays or her dad; she’s just sort of lost touch with them for a while, as do a lot of kids her age.

In the newest Jingle Belle story, Santa Claus Vs. Frankenstein, Santa finds himself under attack from a politician out to ban Santa’s image from every public venue. Though she is seemingly doing it for altruistic reasons, the politician is doing it to get free air time and advance her own career. When Santa really starts to buckle under the tide of public opinion turning against him, Jingle is the first to fly to his defense, alongside a very bizarre ally. In the final chapter of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the monster is left wandering the North Pole. I thought it was only natural that Frankie and Santa should eventually meet, and of course Jing is the one that brings the two of them together.
