Episode 28: The City on the Edge of Forever.

In drawing the character Edith Keeler, Ortiz went with "a '70s/'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' approach." According to Quantum Mechanix, The Beatles' Yellow Submarine was and still is a big influence in much of his work.

Episode 53: The Ultimate Computer.

Ortiz wanted to be sure to credit not just the lead actors, but the writers and director as well. He says, "They are, after all, the creators. I'm just interpreting their words and visuals in a different format."

Episode 75: The Way to Eden.

The look here is Grateful Dead-esque. "I knew that I wanted to create a black-light poster for this series, and naturally, "The Way to Eden," with its hippie theme, seemed perfect," said the artist.

Cool New Thing: Retro STAR TREK: TOS Art Prints

Date: 20 August 2012 Time: 06:36 PM ET
A couple of weeks ago Newsarama readers responded in a big way to a new series of DC Comics retro art prints, and last week we stumbled on something cool and in the same vein - a set of retro art prints based on episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series.

Produced by Quantum Mechanix Inc., the first set of four plated-printed lithographs each measuring 18 inches x 24 inches are inspired by "1960s-era movie posters, pulp novel covers, comic books and advertisements."

Prints based on all 80 ST:TOS episodes will be produced and released in sets of four over 20 months.

All created by artist Juan Ortiz, each image in this gallery is accompanied by commentary from the artist, including his thoughts on this image, based on the episode (#9) "Dagger of the Mind".

"The image is a stylized version of the patch worn by the doctor in the episode," said Ortiz. "I tried to give this poster an old Playbill look."
