Cover Convention: When Heroes Say 'I QUIT!'

Superheroes never quit. Except when they quit.

One of the most long-standing cover tropes is the scene of our hero, filled with righteous indignation and/or tears, telling the world to take this job and shove it. We're not sure when this began to pick up steam, but it seems like most major characters have, at one time or another, walked off the job.

The latest appears to be Tony Stark, walking away (again) from the red-and-gold armor in the upcoming story "Long Way Down," starting in Invincible Iron Man #516, out next week.

To clarify, we have tried to avoid any covers that feature heroes quitting teams. That's an entirely different kind of quitting. Here, our eye is fixed firmly on heroes taking a powder from their heroic careers.

Let's take a look at the gallery, and let us know any of your favorites we might have missed.
