February 2013 Comic Book Sales Continue Strong Upward Trend

Diamond Comic Distributors released their February 2013 sales data Friday morning, and powered by strong comic book sales, the industry is up another robust double-digit figure over the same time last year. Comichron notes that February 2012 was a rare February Leap Year 5th week (with 5 on-sale Wednesdays), so the year-over-year gains are even more impressive at second glance.

Geoff Johns' Justice League of America #1, with its 52 state flag variants was somewhat predictably the bestselling comic book of February, followed by Marvel and Bendis' Uncanny X-Men #1 debut.

Marvel and DC split the Top 10 6 to 4, respectively, but Batman Incorporated #8, which featured the death of Robin/Damian Wayne, did not finish in the Top 10. DC didn't reveal the issue's contents until 2 days before it went on sale (meaning weeks after its Final Order Cut-off date) and since its on sale (2/27) was just a day before the end of the month, it'll be interesting to see if the issue and subsequent printings (the 2nd printing arrives March 13) make the March Top 10.

DC, which will not be conducting its monthly sales interview with the comics press this month, issued a press release instead highlighting what the publisher believes are its top February sales achievements.

Among their claims:

- In the bookstore market, February saw DCE publish 15 out of the top 50 titles according to Nielsen Bookscan, and DC February book trade sales are up 65 percent over last year.

- In the digital realm, Injustice: Gods Among Us, DC's weekly digital-first comic based on the upcoming video game, makes up four out of the top five digital books for the month and seven out of the top 10. DC did not specify what chart they were citing.

Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's return to The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - Top Shelf's Nemo: Heart of Ice was the best-selling graphic novel.

Market share-wise, Marvel took the wins in both categories comfortably - 34.86% vs. DC's 29.22% in Dollar share, and 38.46 vs. DC's 32.89% in Unit share.

Comichron notes that IDW set a record dollar share for itself last February, and it seems to have done so again this February, topping 7% for the first time.

But the story is still the gains the industry continues to make overall.

While comic books sales were up slightly and graphic novel sales were down considerably vs. the five-Wednesday January, resulting in a small overall decline, February comic book sales were up 15.91% vs. February 2012 and overall sales were up 10.48% over the same period last year.

Year-to-date overall sales are up 18.39% vs. 2012 and the good times for retailers don't seem to be in danger of ending anytime soon.
