Spider-Man has his new movie archnemesis: Chris Cooper.

The actor will play Norman Osborn — also known as the Green Goblin — in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It's currently unclear if he'll actually appear in the supervillain role in this film or remain a civilian, given that the movie already has Jamie Foxx as Electro and Paul Giamatti as The Rhino.

Cooper won an Academy Award for 2002's Adaptation, and played the antagonist roles in The Bourne Identity and The Muppets. The role of Norman Osborn was originally played on screen by Willem Dafoe in Sam Raimi's 2002 Spider-Man, a role he reprised via flashbacks in subsequent films.

Last summer's Amazing Spider-Man featured a post-credits scene with a shadowed character played by Michael Massee, who many fans speculated might have been Norman Osborn. What, if anything, that may have to do with the Cooper casting news remains to be seen.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is scheduled for release on May 2, 2014. In December, director Marc Webb announced the casting of Dane DeHaan as Norman's son, Harry Osborn.
