TOMB RAIDER Back to BEGINNINGS at Dark Horse Comics

Eight years after her last series ended, gaming icon Lara Croft is making a comeback to the world of comic books thanks to a new partnership between Crystal Dynamics/Square Enix and Dark Horse Comics. From 1999 to 2005 the further adventures of Lara Croft, Tomb Raider were chronicled in the pages of Top Cow comics, which had the dual-wielding archeologist exploring the world for rare treasures and crossing parts with some of Top Cow’s stable of characters including Sara Pezzini (Witchblade) and Jackie Estacado (The Darkness).

With the release of Crystal Dynamics/Square Enix’s franchise reboot Tomb Raider imminent, plans have now been revealed to not only launch a similarly rebooted new ongoing Tomb Raider comic series after the game is released, but a 48-page, six-part hardcover omnibus TOMB RAIDER: The Beginning that will serve as a prequel to the action in the new game.

According to the information provided by Dark Horse, “TOMB RAIDER: The Beginning follows the story of how the crew came together for The Endurance's fateful mission to discover the lost Japanese kingdom of Yamatai. Originally intended to feature as the latest installment of Dr. James Whitman's successful archaeology show, Whitman's World, the show-biz archaeologist gets more than he bargained for when he enlists the help of Captain Conrad Roth. As Roth's unique and eccentric crew gradually come together and share their stories and secrets, the expedition faces unexpected threats before it's even begun.”

Dark Horse editor Dave Marshall is ready for fans to see the ‘new’ Lara, “The bold new vision of the game demanded we bring an equally fresh approach to the comics. We’re excited for TOMB RAIDER fans to experience a new side of Lara Croft as they accompany her on the earliest parts of her first adventure.”

New Tomb Raider game and prequel comic writer Rhianna Pratchett (Mirror's Edge) is enthusiastic about the effort, "Whilst penning Lara’s origins story for the game I had lots of ideas about the world she and the other characters inhabited, and the story behind their voyage: as great to be able to flesh out the world of TOMB RAIDER and work with the talented team at Dark Horse to bring Lara Croft back to comics.”

The cover for TOMB RAIDER: The Beginning has been revealed and four preview pages are available on the Tomb Raider Facebook site. Gamers who preorder Tomb Raider from Best Buy will be the first to get a look at the finished item.
