Marvel's long-in-the-works massively multiplayer online role-playing game is getting closer, and the closed beta registration process has now begun.
Marvel Heroes doesn't have a release date, but those interested in testing an unfinished version can register online here. The next step is filling out a survey, then invites will be sent out to those selected — community director Stephen Reid said in a blog post that the "first round of invitees will be a very exclusive, small number of people," though more will be added, and a few beta keys will be given out later this month at New York Comic Con.
The game, lead-written by Brian Michael Bendis, has gone through several stages of development dating back to 2008, and will be free to play with no monthly subscription. Characters confirmed to be a part of Marvel Heroes thus far include Black Panther, Black Widow, Cable, Captain America, Colossus, Cyclops, Daredevil, Deadpool, Emma Frost, Hawkeye, Hulk, Human Torch, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Punisher, Rocket Raccoon, Scarlet Witch, Spider-Man, Squirrel Girl, Storm, Thing, Thor and Wolverine. A major stated difference between Marvel Heroes and similar titles is that gamers will be able to play as recognizable Marvel heroes, rather than created characters interacting with the Marvel world.
Marvel Heroes will be available for Windows at launch, with a Mac OS version coming at a later date.
